Posters about Africa These posters behind the front door were not part of the furnishings in Ms. Catherine’s house. They are here to explain who the people were who lived in these houses. The people here were the descendants of Africans from hundreds of different ethnic groups. And each of these ethnic groups had a cultural heritage that had been developed over many centuries—so these cultures were strong and resilient. Africans brought that cultural heritage to South Carolina, and it was passed on to the people who lived in these houses. Consequently, the people here had a tremendous cultural resource to sustain them through their years of adversity. And it was this cultural heritage that they contributed to the making of our southern culture. Photo 1999. |
