Figure 85. Who built the houses?

Note the full-dovetailed cornering.  Also, note the timbers—all are of uniform size and fit closely together with minimal cracks between them.  This workmanship tells something about the African Americans who built these cabins.  Such work is evidence that the builders were skilled wood-craftsmen who took pride in their work.  They probably came from a tradition that went back for many generations in Africa.  (Photo 1998)
