Figure 95.  Hewing with a broad ax

After a log was scored, a man used a broadax to hew away pieces of wood until that side of the log was flat.  When all four sides were hewn, the man had turned a round log into an 8” x 8” hewn timber.  (Drawing by Chris McJunkin for the hewn-timber cabins collection, 2002.)
