Figure 99. Adz with proper handle

This modern adz illustrates the correct adz handle—one with a graceful curve.  The blade is very sharp so it is covered to prevent anyone being hurt.  Many African Americans used adzes well into this century making crossties for the railroads.  My favorite story is about a man who advertised, “Wanted: Men experienced working with adz.”   He said he could tell who had experience for they were the ones who arrived carrying a wooden crate—to stand in so they would not chop their leg off.  (Photo 1998)
