A person making a shingle would stand a block (billet) of wood on end, place the blade of the froe near the edge of the billet, and hit the blade with a small maul, called a mallet. As the froe was driven in, a shingle would split off. Here, Archie Waiters demonstrates shingle-making using a stump in place of a billet of wood. (Photo 1986)
