Figure 122.  Lock from gin house

Who made this lock is not known.  It came from a nineteenth-century gin house on the Pearce farm, several miles south of Francis Marion University.  The blacksmith on that farm in 1910 was an African American.  Perhaps the blacksmith who installed this lock in the previous century was an African American, carrying on the African tradition of incorporating beauty into utilitarian objects.  (Photo 1997)
