made sixty cents The arrow on a 1929 payroll points to the name Tena. That was Ms. Tena Waiters, Archie Waiters’s mother. She probably had gotten up early in the morning and cooked breakfast for the family, then went to the field with the other people listed above. All morning she would have hoed cotton--then hurried home to cook dinner, and then went back to the field. During that whole week, Ms. Tena got only one day’s work and made only sixty cents.
