Figure 132.  The Lightning Calculator

This book, The Lightning Calculator, published in 1899, has a table telling how much to pay the people who picked cotton.  The table starts at 25 cents for 100 pounds.  On that pay scale, if a person worked hard all day and picked 75 pounds, she would make 19 cents for the day’s work.  The pay scale was even lower when Archie Waiters was a young man.  He said that the pay then was 20 cents for 100 pounds.  (J. L. Nichols and Co., comp., The Lightening Calculator for Selling Cotton, Picking Cotton, and Selling Seed Cotton [J. L. Nichols and Co., 1899])
