Figure 14: Their old houses stood empty

Two of the Waiterses’ married sons lived briefly in the hewn-timber houses.  After that, the houses stood empty.  In 1974, the houses were placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1980, nine acres were donated to Francis Marion College as a permanent site for the houses.  (Photo 1970s)
