Archie
Waiters spent much of his life up until the late 1950s
living in one of the hewn-timber houses.
He had a keen memory and left a detailed record of
his own life and of his grandfather’s stories. Waiters’s recollections carried
many hints of his African heritage, including stories
about African-American rice growers at Mars Bluff—a part
of the African cultural heritage that had been retained
for generations but never recorded. (Poster
