Figure 183. Poster: Archie Waiters, 1914-1990

Archie Waiters spent much of his life up until the late 1950s living in one of the hewn-timber houses.  He had a keen memory and left a detailed record of his own life and of his grandfather’s stories.  Waiters’s recollections carried many hints of his African heritage, including stories about African-American rice growers at Mars Bluff—a part of the African cultural heritage that had been retained for generations but never recorded.  (Poster by Amelia Vernon, donated 1998.)
