Figure 181. Poster: African roots

Many of the Africans who were brought to South Carolina came from West Africa and the Congo-Angola area.  This would suggest that at least some of the people who lived in these houses probably came from those two areas.  Though many different ethnic groups lived in the Congo-Angola area, they were all were descended from the Bantu.  That is why the Bantu influence is so strong in Mars Bluff and all across South Carolina.  (Poster by Amelia Vernon, donated 1998.)
