186. Poster: Nigerian woman
flailing rice
This
Nigerian woman also used a table-like structure to thresh
her rice, but she used no flail. She
simply beat the stalks of rice against the structure and
the grains of rice fell through to a sheet on the ground. Though the Mars Bluff rice
growers used a variety of methods, no one at Mars Bluff
used this method of threshing. (“Recommended
Practices for Swamp Rice Production” [Samaru, Zaria,
Nigeria: Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison
Services, Ahmadu Bello University, 1981])
