The Waiterses had a big garden and Ms. Catherine canned many quarts of food. Here are half-gallon, quart, and pint jars of food canned just as Ms. Waiters would have done, though these jars were done in the old Gregg/Wallace house. The gourd was grown by an African American in Florence County in the 1990s. It recalls the African custom of growing large gourds as containers for food and water. (Photo 1998)
