Figure 62: Ed Pinkney Ed Pinkney and his wife Janie Pinkney were the last African Americans to live on the land that is now Francis Marion University. The hewn-timber cabins exhibit is indebted to them for much of the furniture on display. In their last years, Mr. and Ms. Pinkney lived in a new house close to Ms. Catherine’s, but prior to that, they had used this furniture for many years when they lived in a hewn-timber house almost exactly like Ms. Catherine’s, with a hewn-timber part and a shed room addition at the rear. It was located west of Francis Marion University campus, and was said by Alex Gregg to be older than the cabins built in about 1836. (Photo 1960) |
