Figure 70: Lodge badge Another treasure from the Pinkneys was their badge of membership in the lodge called the Church Aid Society. It met miles away from their home, but members from this area cheerfully walked the distance once a month to attend the meeting and pay their dues. Secret societies, like Joint Stock and Church Aid Society, were very important to African Americans. These organizations no doubt had roots in the secret societies that played an important role in the lives of people in Africa. (Photo 1994) |
