Figure 915.  Hasp from corn barn

This hasp was attached to the door of the J. Eli Gregg corn barn. The barn dates from about 1836 and the hasp was probably made at that time. It was obviously made by the blacksmith with an eye for beauty. There is no evidence to prove that the blacksmith who did this work was, or was not, African American. We do know that Africans had been doing beauiful metal work for centuries.  Photo 1984.
