Figure 103. Mallet

A mallet is a small maul that is used to strike a froe.  This mallet was given to the hewn-timber cabins collection in 2002 by John Parker Bultman. Though now a resident of North Carolina, he is a native of Mars Bluff and one of the people most knowledgeable about early construction methods at Mars Bluff.  Bultman had acquired this mallet in the traditional Mars Bluff way, by walking through the forest and looking for a tree limb that would be the correct size for a mallet.  He shaped the handle to suit his hand size.  Prior to this donation, the cabins’ exhibit of shingle making had never had a proper mallet.  (Photo 2002.)
