Archie Waiters said that when Ruska Gregg wanted to make a basket, he first cut a straight white oak tree. If he wanted five-foot strips of oak for a basket, he cut a log 5' 6" long. He then used a bark spud to strip the bark off the log. Here, Waiters demonstrates using a bark spud--a sharpened piece of metal on a long handle. (Photo 1984)
