Figure 112. Gluts To make a basket, Gregg quartered a log and set two quarters together, standing in a hole, braced against another log. Working at the top of one of the quarters, he used a chisel and a hammer to begin splitting off a thin strip of wood. As the chisel began to split off a narrow slice of oak, he placed a glut (a wooden wedge) in the crack to hold it open and to make it split straight. (Photo 1980s) |
