Figure 118.  Trough

The trough standing on end in the door was made by Otis Waiters and Richard Waiters in the 1990s in an attempt to revive a lost art.  Ruska Gregg was known to have been a maker of troughs, and it is possible he made the most beautiful trough I have ever seen.  It was the horse trough in the mule lot on the old J. Eli Gregg farm.  That trough was a gem: deep and thin-sided, perfectly squared and perfectly smooth, with graceful curved edges.  Carved from a poplar tree, it was over twelve feet long—an impressive work of art.  (Photo 1991)
