"hinge" Archie Waiters recalled that, when he was young, he saw pieces of wood like this one still being used on gates. They probably date from the earliest days of settlement. This piece, which has one end rotted away, was recently found beside Francis Marion University campus. It carries us back to the early days--to the man who made it, a man who was probably still close to the African tradition of fine woodcraft. (Photo 1994) |
