Figure 131.  Numbers on field scales

The numbers etched on the scale told the story—how many pounds each person had picked—how much money each person had made that day.  A wagon carried the cotton to be stored in the cotton house, a big barn built for that purpose.  This field scale was the one used on the land where Francis Marion University now stands.  (Photo 1994)
