Her mother grew rice As a child, Ms. Ida Zanders lived in Ms. Tena’s house, which then stood on its original site, west of the present Francis Marion University library. In this photograph, Ms. Zanders is standing in front of the library on the spot where her mother, Fanny Jolly Ellison, grew rice beside her vegetable garden. Whereas most of the Mars Bluff rice growers sought out wet land for their small plots of rice, Ms. Zanders practiced dry-land rice cultivation. (Photo 1988) |
