grower Fannie Jolly Ellison was the only woman rice grower in the group of twenty-one African American rice growers who have been identified at Mars Bluff. One would expect to find more women growing rice at Mars Bluff because among some ethnic groups in Africa, rice is considered a woman's crop and men will have nothing to do with it.
