Figure 145. Mortar and
pestle Though most of the African-American families who raised rice at Mars Bluff had their own mortar and pestle, none of the mortars appears to have survived. The closest I came to finding one was when Frances Johnson recalled that a man asked her mother if he could have her mortar and she gave it to him. This mortar and pestle was made by Otis Waiters and Richard Waiters under the direction of their father. (Photo 1998) |
