Wallpaper from the hewn-timber house
Much of
the newspaper that Ms. Catherine Waiters had put on her
walls in the early 1950s was still in place when Hurricane
Hugo collapsed the roof of the house in 1989. Shown here are examples of the
paper that fell off the walls after they were drenched by
the storm. Regular newspaper
was the most common material used, but there were also
colorful comic-strip pages, and one example shows the
flour paste on the reverse side of the paper. (Poster by Amelia Vernon,
