This
strap hinge is like the other hinges made for J. Eli
Gregg's houses and barns. They were all constructed in
the same way and have a thumb-end, a round end on the
strap. There is one difference between this hinge and
the others; it has a square terminal hole where all the
other hinges that collected in the Gregg barn have round
terminal holes. This hinge was exchanged for the one
that had hung in the exhibit when it was discovered that
the hinge hanging on the cabin wall was one that
belonged on Vernon's barn door. The exchanged hinges
were identical except that this one is slightly longer
than the former one and this one has the square hole. (Photo, 2002.) |
