Figure
154. White-oak
basket
This
white-oak basket was donated to the hewn-timber cabins
exhibit by Dorothy and John Parker Bultman in 2003. It had been given to Ms. Bultman
by her sister who had bought it from a white-oak basket
maker in South Carolina, and the Bultmans had used it for
thirty-five years. They gave
their basket to the exhibit to take the place of the Ruska
Gregg basket which had been in the exhibit for over a
decade and needed to be protected from further damage, it
being the only thing that Archie Waiters knew for sure had
been made by Ruska Gregg. In
construction, the two baskets are very similar, but
Gregg’s basket was much older as Gregg died in 1926. (Photo 2005) |
