Figure 170.  Poster: 1929 payroll with Hun’s name

On this payroll, the arrow points to the name Hun, the name by which Archie Waiters was known.  He was only fifteen years old and already he was doing a man’s work, plowing from sunrise to dark.  He had worked 4.9 days, and for all of that work he was being paid $4.40.  That is why people looked forward to cotton-picking time—the only time they could make more money.
