Figure 171.  Poster: 1929 payroll with Ms. Tena’s name

The arrow on this 1929 payroll points to the name Tena.  That was Ms. Tena Waiters, Archie Waiters’s mother, who lived in one of the hewn-timber houses for many years.  That day in 1929, she probably had gotten up early in the morning, cooked breakfast for the family, and then went to the field with the other people listed above.  All morning she would have hoed—and then hurried back home to cook dinner, then went back to the field.  (Poster by Amelia Vernon, donated 1998.)
