Archie Waiters, who occasionally worked at the Mars Bluff grist mill on Sautrdays, said that a sifter like his was used at the mill to sift dirt out of the corn before grinding it and to separate the husks from the grits and corn meal after grinding. The sifters were attached so that they shook constantly and consequenly were able to sift as fast as the mill ran. Waiters was holding a small piece of bend wood that was the same material and construction as the sifter. Its use is unknown. Photo 1984.
