Figure 73: Broom Straw Ms. Pinkney must have gathered this broomstraw one fall day back about 1970 so that she would have a supply when she needed to make a broom, but then she moved to a nursing home. When she died, her son said he did not want anything from her house. Later, when her house was to be moved off Francis Marion University campus, Amelia Wallace (Ms. Walter Wallace) carefully labeled and stored in the old Gregg corn barn all of Ms. Pinkney’s possessions, even her broomstraw. So it is thanks to Amelia Wallace’s care that Ms. Pinkney is represented so well in the hewn-timber cabins exhibit. (Photo 1998) |
